The Letter Trick

This topic explains how to get a villager's picture by simply mailing them letters.
There isn't much testing left to be done, you are welcome to try it out and tell us your results.

How it works
Ideally, it should work like this:

- Biskit moves into your town.
- Introduce yourself to him.
By introducing yourself you now have the ability to mail him letters.
- Go to Nook's and purchase 6 bundles of stationary.
- Go to the Post Office and write a total of 24 medium-sized letters to him. (you do not have to leave the post office during each mailing)
- Wait for Biskit to exit his house.
- Once he's outside, run to the top of your town. (or choose a place where he can't walk up to you.)
- Wait 15 minutes.
- After the 15 minutes are up, run around until you find Biskit.

If done properly, Biskit will notice you with a !, or _\ / symbol above his head. Talk to him and he may give you his picture! (If you do not get a picture in the first try, then wait 15 more minutes and try again.)
It may take a few !, or _\ / events (keep reading for an explanation), but Biskit will give you his picture in a very timely manner.
You've successfully completed the letter trick!
-
note: The letter trick can be done on old villagers or new villagers.
-
note: The expressions that appear over your animal's head will look like a !, or a _\ /. Both expressions are interchangeable. You can receive a picture from either one.
-
This works because letters increase friendship. Once you've mailed enough letters to your target animal, your friendship with him will be "maxed out" and they will give you their picture.

Very important notes:
You must include a gift (it doesn't matter what it is) in each of your letters.
The letters that you send must get you a positive response and only leaf-furniture, carpet, or wallpaper in return.
When mailing letters for the "letter trick" replies do not matter and you do not need to check your mail box at all. You don't even need to leave the Post Office while mailing.

The content of your letter:
After you've mailed a letter you will receive one of five different types of replies:
- reply 1. Your villager doesn't understand your letter. He'll write you a bad response and you won't receive a gift regardless of whether or not you included one in your letter. This is the result of sending a poorly written letter.
- reply 2. Your villager likes your letter, he'll send you back a good reply, but no gift. This is the result of writing a good letter, but not including a gift. You can not receive a gift back if you do not include a gift yourself.
- reply 3. Your villager likes your short letter, and writes you a good reply. Since you included a gift in your letter, he will send you either a shirt or a piece of fruit with his reply.
- reply 4. Your villager likes your medium-sized letter and writes you a good reply. Since you included a gift in your letter, he will send you only leaf-furniture with his reply.
- reply 5. Your villager likes your long letter and writes you a good reply. Since you included a gift in your letter, he will send you carpet, wallpaper, or leaf-furniture with his reply.

In order to increase friendship you must send a letter that will get you either reply #4, or reply #5.

Letters in which you receive no gift, bad replies, and letters that yield fruit and shirt replies, do nothing to increase friendship.
In other words, you need to always be sending letters that will get you a good response and at least leaf-furniture.

The stock letter:
You can write the same thing in every letter and mail it 100 times to the same villager. Your animals will never get upset with you, and if it's a letter that you know gets a good response, you will always get that good response. This is called a stock letter.
This is a perfect example of a stock letter that will yield only leaf-furniture replies:
friend friend friend
Friend friend

Remember, you must attach a gift to every letter in order to receive a gift back and increase friendship.

In a nut shell, Animal Crossing: Wild World letters do not have to have capitalization, punctuation, or proper sentence structure to be understood. I recommend writing around 30 characters (letters) in your letter (not including your signature and addressee's name

If you are using this stock letter for the letter trick keep these things in mind:
You can use copy/paste, which makes this a very fast letter to write.
- Writing the word "friend" 5 times is enough to receive a good response and only leaf-furniture in return (perfect for the letter trick!)
- Writing the word "friend" any more than 8 times in one letter will get you a bad response! Be sure to keep track of the number of "friends" you put into a letter.
- Writing the word "friend" any less than 5 times will get you shirts and fruit, or a bad response.

In short, do not write the word "friend" any less than 5 times in one letter!
-
If you choose to use your own "stock letter" be sure to test it on one of your other villagers first.

Make sure the letter you're sending gets you a good response and leaf furniture, or carpets and wallpapers in return.

If you receive shirts or fruit then that means the letter won't work for you (meaning it won't increase friendship) and you need to try something else.

What kind of gift should I send?
Anything! The value or rarity of the gift that you send has no effect on friendship or the gift you receive in return. The cheapest gift you can send is a seashell. If you do not want your villagers replacing their furniture with seashells then you can include bells or fruit with your letter, as your villagers can not display those items. I mail a 100-bell bag with each of my letters. That way when I receive a gift back I can turn around and sell that gift and actually make money off of the whole scheme.

When the Letter Trick fails…

In some rare cases, villagers will be stubborn in giving you their picture. Usually chatting with them and sending them a few more letters is enough to max out friendship. But some villagers need a lot of extra coaxing to give you their picture. It's almost as if it was predetermined that this animal will give you a hard time in your picture obtaining.

This "phenomenon" does not appear to be gender, personality, species, or named villager specific. My Apollo may give me his picture in an instant, while your Apollo may require lots of extra friendship boosters to give you his.

note: Lazy villagers can sometimes glitch preventing you from ever obtaining their picture. This is not what I am referring to here.

Common problems with the letter trick, and what to try:
If you receive shirts and fruit in return for your letters then that letter won't increase friendship! Please mess around with the wording of your letter to ensure that you will only receive furniture or carpets and wallpaper in return.
-
If you have mailed 24 letters and have not received a picture in 1-6 !, or _\ / events then you may need to talk with the animal and mail a few more letters out. Usually it will only be a few extra !, or _\ / events before you get a picture anyway, but the combined effort of letters and talking to the animal will max out friendship and you'll be well on your way to getting that picture.
These cases are usually rare. If this does happen to you, we would like to hear about it so we can help you figure out what caused it.
-
When mailing your letters, you can be inside, but whilst waiting the 15 minutes you must be outside. Keybladekidd

In order for us to help you we'll need to know all the steps you took while performing the letter trick. Please be as descriptive as possible.

You may now start testing the letter trick!
The following is just information and questions that may still require some testing.
Take a crack at them if you're feeling bored.
-
whilst posting the letters, you can be indoors. But whilst waiting the 15 minutes, then you must be waiting outside.

Already?
While rare, it has been reported that animals will sometimes give you their picture without much interaction at all! (meaning no letters, barely chatting with them, etc.) These instances appear to be completely random. Perhaps luck plays a role in this? It has also been mentioned that jealousy might be a reason for a villager to give up his picture so easily.
This occurrence may also be similar to the few instances of the letter trick not working on an animal. It's almost as if it was predetermined that this animal will give you a hard time in your picture obtaining. The opposite may hold true in that an animal may be predetermined to give you his picture well before you've put any effort into your relationship with him.
note: This does not appear to be gender, personality, species, or named villager specific. My Apollo may give me his picture in an instant, while your Apollo may require lots of extra friendship boosters to give you his.

Can friendship decrease?
We know it can increase, but does striking an animal with tools and ignoring him make getting his picture harder?
Earlier findings appear to have been incorrect. Friendship can decrease. Before you've obtained a villager's picture you can get two reactions from him by waving. They will either be happy and wave/bow towards you, or they will scowl at you! Villagers automatically start out waving/bowing. But if you repeatedly hit them with a net, write them a bad letter, shove them etc. they will then scowl at you. However, it seems to only take 1 letter to get them out of their depression, so I'm unsure whether or not this affects getting their picture in a timely manner.

The Lazy Villager Glitch
A villager's personality does not affect whether or not they will give you a hard time obtaining their picture. However, there is a glitch associated with the lazy personality that can prevent you from ever obtaining their picture. The glitch occurs when a Lazy character walks up to you during a !, or _\ / event. He will start a dialog that sounds a lot like he's about to give you his picture, but he will abruptly end the conversation and walk away without giving you anything! From then on, he will converse with you as though he has already given you his picture and you will never be able to obtain another one from him.

The solutions: If you are not absolutely positive that your friendship with a lazy villager is maxed out, then do not trigger !, or _\ / events with him! If you do talk to him and he gives you this glitch then do not save your game! You will need to reset (yes, Resetti will chew you out) and then work on increasing your friendship with the lazy villager before speaking to him in another !, or _\ / event. If you have already saved your game after this glitch then there are only two other ways of obtaining the villager's picture: buy or trade for the picture with one of your friends, or create a second character in your town and obtain the picture using him. Each character that lives in your town can obtain another set of pictures from each villager.
